For those who may not be aware, there was a horrible fire at an event in on the second floor of a building (being reported as a warehouse in the media) in Oakland last night, with artist Golden Donna.
The UNNET family sends its love and support to those affected and we hope for the speedy recovery of those affected. To those who have lost, words cannot express our condolences for your loss.
While the exact details and casualties are not clear, this really struck home for me. I used to party in Oakland and The Bay, in locations just like this. We broke into warehouses, while we paid to legally occupy others. Many had shifty safety and fire code records, but we went on, sometimes oblivious to the danger we faced. I can’t help but think of how many 10, 50 or 100 times in past decades of events where my life was potentially in similar danger.
In this era, most events are legal and permitted, but if you know where to find them, there are plenty of events off the radar that are just as unsanctioned as those from the 90s. While in my experience, they are generally safe, please be mindful of any venue you enter.
I and the UNNET family hope to never have to hear of loss of life at an event again.
